About 7 years ago, I developed a fascination and love for novels about India, whether it be a story about an Indian family, Indian immigrants in America, or like "The Palace of Illusions", a tale that is intertwined with the folklore of India. These stories fascinate me and take me to another world--it is almost impossible to put them down. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a master of weaving such tales, that hook you with emotion, and keep you enthralled to the very end. I have read almost all of her books and highly recommend each one.

I don’t know anything about the traditional version of the Mahabharat but despite that I found Divakaruni’s retelling through the eyes of the main female character, Panchaali, very interesting and easy to get into. I love the way Divakaruni takes you through Panchaali’s life and how she introduces and develops the various characters; she doesn’t rely on readers already knowing the story, which really helps The Palace of Illusions stand on it’s own.

"Synopsis" by , Taking us back to a time that is half history, half myth and wholly magical, The Palace of Illusions gives new voice to Panchaali, the fire-born heroine of the Mahabharat, as she weaves a vibrant interpretation of an ancient tale. Married to five royal husbands who have been cheated out of their father's kingdom, Panchaali aids their quest to reclaim their birthright, remaining at their side through years of exile and a terrible civil war. But she cannot deny her complicated friendship with the enigmatic Krishna—or her secret attraction to the mysterious man who is her husbands' most dangerous enemy—as she is caught up in the ever-manipulating hands of fate.
