Publisher Comments:
From Wizard Magazine's Top Ten writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) and Eisner Award-winning artist Tony Harris (Starman) comes a collection of one of the most critically acclaimed new series of the year, featuring a gorgeous new cover by Harris! The First Hundred Days collects the first five issues of this stellar ongoing political thriller, including the extra-sized origin of the super-heroic Great Machine, as well as the 4-part "State of Emergency."
Set in our modern-day world, Ex Machina tells the story of civil engineer Mitchell Hundred, who becomes America's first living, breathing super-hero after a strange accident gives him amazing powers. Eventually Mitchell tires of risking his life merely to maintain the status quo, retires from masked crimefighting, and runs for mayor of New York City, winning by a landslide.
But Mayor Hundred has to worry about more than just budget problems and an antagonistic governor, especially when a mysterious hooded figure begins assassinating plow drivers during the worst snowstorm in the city's history!
Review:
"Set somewhere between The West Wing and an alternative future, this tale asks the question: What if the mayor of New York was a superhero? Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) and Harris (Starman) answer with intelligence and dash. In classic superhero origin, Mitchell Hundred is just another civil engineer until an encounter with a glowing light under the Brooklyn Bridge gives him the power to talk to machines. Fast forward three years: after a famed stint as a superhero, Hundred has just been elected mayor of New York and must deal with not only the colorful cast of characters that make up his staff but also a host of crises: a PR disaster set off by an exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum; a crippling blizzard; and, most worryingly, a serial killer who's bumping off the city's snow plow drivers. Vaughan cleverly adapts real news stories — New York mayoral politics, the Sensations art scandal — and plausibly fits them into a world where superheroes exist, but are forbidden by the NSA to talk about their powers, while adding surprising twists and turns. Harris's gritty, charismatic characters give the story further appeal. This vastly entertaining first collection should have readers eager to read future volumes." Review:
"Vaughan ingeniously sets up the entire series as overlapping flashbacks to the beginning of Hundred's term and earlier." Douglas Wolk, The Washington Post
Review:
"This story...has sharp dialog, first-rate artwork, drama, intrigue, humor, romance, super-science, a strong focus on social and political issues, a great supporting cast, and at its center a man who is, despite his protestations, a real hero." Library Journal
Review:
"[A] delightful and highly entertaining read....Ex Machina: The First Hundred Days is truly a ground-breaking series, and a wonderfully inventive creation that will surely have a direct impact on the continued evolution and maturity of the comic book medium." SFSite.com
Review:
"You don't have to be a fan of [Vaughan's] other work to enjoy Ex Machina, just a fan of intelligent, well-written action-dramas. Though Y: The Last Man has a better mystery, Ex Machina is its equal in terms of quality and should not be missed." IGN.com

In this alternate history by the author of Y: The Last Man, the mayor of New York City is a former superhero named Mitchell Hundred. Hundred has the ability to speak with, and thus control, machines of all kinds. As a superhero he suffered from the usual accusations of vigilantism, but now he has been elected as mayor of New York, and must adjust to a new set of accusations. I'm really looking forward to reading further volumes of this series -- it kind of reads like a cross between Spiderman and The West Wing.

What if post 9/11 NYC elected an superhero (who had prevented one of the towers from being hit) to be mayor? and what if he believed in civics and cared equally about law and order and civil liberties? As usual, Brian K. Vaughan blew my mind with this comic book series. Even if you don't think you're interested in comic books, check out the beginning of the series in this book and you won't be disappointed.
