Dave: IMG Jim Lynch Makes Landscape Art... Out of Text

jimlynchIf Carl Hiaasen set one of his novels on a residential stretch of boundary line between British Columbia and Washington, or if Richard Russo's characters had relatives in the Pacific Northwest, the result might be something like Jim Lynch's Border Songs. Continue »

Publisher Comments:

In his new book, economist Dean Baker debunks the myth that conservatives favor the market over government intervention. In fact, conservatives rely on a range of "nanny state" policies that ensure the rich get richer while leaving most Americans worse off. It's time for the rules to change. Sound economic policy should harness the market in ways that produce desirable social outcomes - decent wages, good jobs and affordable health care. Dean Baker is co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

America’s wealth is so dangerously lopsided (income slightly less so) that 1 percent of households own 33.4% of the nation's net worth; 10% own over 71%; and the bottom 40% own less than 1%. Although America spends two trillion annually on health care -- more than any other nation —the money goes into the pockets of doctors, lobbyists, wealthy investors, and pharmaceutical companies. As for the medical benefits, the lion’s share goes principally to the well heeled. Most bankruptcies are precipitated by sickness.
Should we not be ashamed that 45-million American citizens have no health insurance–that millions more with insurance will be denied benefits when disaster strikes? Middle-class families can be pauperized in a fortnight. Is it only America’s more affluent populations that deserve to live? Meantime, George W. Bush brags to the world about what a kind, generous, and sympathetic nation of people we are.
