Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The latest installment of the New York Times bestselling Spellman mysteries, a “series that keeps getting better and better” (Publishers Weekly), finds private investigator Izzy Spellman on the verge of losing everything.

Isabel Spellman is used to being followed, extorted, and questioned—all occupational hazards of working at her family’s firm, Spellman Investigations. Her little sister, Rae, once tailed Izzy for weeks on end to discover the identity of her boyfriend. Her mother, Olivia, once blackmailed Izzy with photographic evidence of Prom Night 1994. It seemed that the Spellmans would lay off after Izzy was fired for breaching client confidentiality, but then Izzy avenged her dismissal by staging a hostile takeover of the company. She should have known better than to think she could put such shenanigans behind her.

In The Last Word, Izzy’s troubles are just beginning. After her hostile takeover of Spellman Investigations, Izzy’s parents simply go on strike. Her sister, Rae, comes back into the family business with questionable motivations. Her other employees seem to be coping with anxiety disorders, and she has no idea how to pay the bills. However, her worst threat comes from someone who is no relation. Within months of assuming control of the business, Izzy is accused of embezzling from a former client, the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Slayter, who happens to have Alzheimer’s, which Izzy and he are diligently trying to keep under wraps. Not only is Slayter’s business and reputation on the line, but if Izzy gets indicted for embezzlement, she’ll lose everything—her business, her license, and her family’s livelihood. Is this the end of Izzy Spellman, PI? The answer makes The Last Word, hands down, the most thrilling book in this bestselling, award-nominated series.

Review:

"Lutz delivers another rollicking good time in her sixth novel featuring the wacky San Francisco family of PIs (after 2012's Trail of the Spellmans). Everyone in the Spellman clan is in an uproar because of Isabel's hostile takeover of the firm. Izzy's parents, Albert and Olivia, have taken up a passive-aggressive retaliation involving boxer shorts and plastic curlers, while her sister, Rae, has devised a new revenge-based income stream. Meanwhile, Izzy is helping client Edward Slayter hide his Alzheimer's, but it's clear someone is determined to get him kicked out as CEO of a very profitable venture capital firm, and that someone is willing to sic the FBI on Izzy for embezzlement as part of the scheme. Former boyfriend Henry Stone keeps showing up at peculiar times, and Izzy's battles with her tyrannical three-year-old niece, Sydney (aka Princess Banana), are escalating. The hilarious office memos and footnotes add to the fun. Agent: Stephanie Rostan, Levine Greenberg Literary Agency. (July)" Publishers Weekly Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Synopsis:

"The Last Word is Raymond Chandler meets Arrested Development. Zany, witty, and full of dark surprises, Lisa Lutz's novel is pure fun—and Izzy Spellman, PI, tops the list of 'Fictional Characters I'd Like to Meet for a Bourbon.'"—Gillian Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

If your preferred genre is humorous mystery, suspense, character driven novels set in & around San Francisco, be sure to discover the 'Trail of the Spellmans' by Lisa Lutz. It's difficult for me to believe that this is the sixth book in the Spellman series since I have come to know this wildly dysfunctional, highly hysterical family ever so well over the past five books & can highly recommend this book collection. BRAVA--4 stars!

Review of The Last Word by Lisa Lutz.
It's always a good day when I get a new copy of the latest Spellman Novel. This one did not disappoint. Last book, Izzy was fired from the agency by her parents. She fights backs and pulled off a hostile take over. Her parents revolted by wearing their pajamas to work and spending their day in bed instead of the office. Her sister, Rae comes back into the business with an agenda all her own. With all the family drama going on, Izzy is accused of embezzling from a client, the very wealthy Mr. Slater. My Slater has Alzheimer's and its getting worse. Izzy is trying to keep it under wraps. If Izzy is convicted of embezzlement she will lose everything she has fought so hard to keep. This is a fast paced, sassy read. It does leave somethings up in the air. Is this really Izzy's Last Word?
