Publisher Comments:

This classic romance novel tells the true story of the love affair that changed history—that of Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the ancestors of most of the British royal family. Set in the vibrant 14th century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the story features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets—Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II—who ruled despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. Within this era of danger and romance, John of Gaunt, the kings son, falls passionately in love with the already married Katherine. Their well-documented affair and love persist through decades of war, adultery, murder, loneliness, and redemption. This epic novel of conflict, cruelty, and untamable love has become a classic since its first publication in 1954.

About the Author

Anya Seton was the author of 10 bestselling historical romances, including Avalon, Devil Water, Foxfire, Green Darkness, and My Theodosia. She lived in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Katherine has a surprisingly modern tone for being written in the 1950's. Beyond the writing, the characters are incredibly real in the sense that none of them are perfect. So often in historical fiction people are drawn in extremes being either flawless or terrible, but Seton crafts her characters (while still maintaining historical accuracy) with all the positive and negative attributes of real people. It is a beautiful novel and a modern classic.

I read alot of historical fiction and this is a masterpiece! The story is interesting and without having to add any flair to make it so. The author specifically tells us she used nothing but facts. Its the kind of book that brings you into the 1500's and you can hear the sounds of London and the smell of the horses in the streets. Seton does a magnificent job describing medieval London. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history or even anyone who enjoys a great love story. This book was way before its time, it was published in the 50's I believe, so its racy for the time period it was written. Im a serious collector of books and this one is on my favorite list!
