I'm a native Portlander who grew up in the City of Roses in the 1950s and '60s. Reading this book was like having a lightbulb come on in my head. I recognized all of the names. So many of the things I "knew," I finally understood after reading this book. It's a great read for anyone who was there...especially those of us who got our news from the Oregon Journal.

As a native Portlander I found this book extremely entertaining. A quick read with the familiar locations of Portland, and the not so familiar reputation as a "corrupt" city. Worth the read.

"Review" by , "Phil Stanford's little bit of Portland noir, Portland Confidential, lays it out in all its gritty glory, rattling skeletons in the city's many musty closets....[Stanford] simply preserves some fantastic tales of a very different Portland."
"Synopsis" by , From a Portland Tribune columnist comes Portland Confidential, the story of Big Jim Elkins, a conman and criminal who arrived in Portland in 1937 and helped unleash prostitution, bootlegging, gambling, and drug running.
