A memoir of illness and discovering an unexpected companionship with a species we don't normally consider companionate: an everyday garden snail. The author is living through another bout of an undiagnosed debilitating infection and discovering the largeness of a life lived small and slow. The prose shifts from short, clipped sentences, and longer ruminations as she visits memories.

Woman bedridden with unknown disease observes the life of a wild snail that a friend brings in and deposits in a flower pot. Meditation on snails, illness, life. No snails were harmed in the writing of this book.

A quiet, thoughtful, trenchant little book that I couldn't put down. I read many books this past year, but this is the one that stuck with me, and not because snails produce sticky trails--it apparently just found a spot and settled in. I really appreciated it.

"Synopsis" by , A woman, confined to her bed, watches a snail on her night stand, living a life that mirrors the limitations of her own. What follows is an oddly compelling story of her discovery of companionship and beauty in the most unexpected of creatures.
