I recently got the first edition (1997) of The Practical Nomad from my library. Usually I don't get such old travel books, but I was desperate. Every How To (Travel) book I've gotten has been inadequate. Yes, a few good suggestions here and there (e.g. take a door stop with you for room safety) but they seemed to be talking to the naive or novice traveler.

This book was different, written as a mature, educated adult to another. The author had embedded the assumption that the reader is a serious traveler interested in long term (and very long term) travel, which is what I am. He deals in concepts, very important ones, e.g. the need to accept the third (and perhaps fourth) world in your planning, and why ... and HOW!

I am very much looking forward to adcquiring his latest edition - the first travel book I feel is worth paying for (my travels will hopefully start 8/1/09.)
