I asked my thirty-something California vegan niece which cookbook to buy for a recently-declared vegan friend, and she recommended Veganomicon. She says it has so many recipes it would take a lifetime to try and make them all.

I am not a vegan. I am not even a vegetarian. But this is the cookbook that I use more than any other in my collection.

I know! It surprised me, too!

Needless to say, if you're a vegetarian or you regularly cook for a vegetarian, you need this book. But if you're looking to increase whole grains or vegetables in your diet, or just broaden your culinary horizons, you totally need this cookbook. Think home cooking takes a lot of time? There's recipes clearly marked with prep times of 15 and 30 minutes. Hate tofu? It's a valid lifestyle choice, and there are over a hundred recipes in the Veganomicon that don't use it.

There is a good section on pantry staples and basic cooking techniques, but the part I've found the most useful is the desserts section. When you cannot be sure of allergies and dietary preferences at a gathering, the Veganomicon offers gluten-free dessert options that ensures everyone gets a tasty treat.

I love this book! Although some may be put off by the very few pictures in this volume, if you're a real cook you will appreciate the amazing variety and sheer number of recipes included in this valuable reference guide to vegan cooking. Need to know how to make a basic vegan gravy? It's here. Need to wow someone with a fabulous dessert? That's here too.

The authors have put in their time in the vegan world, and it shows. The recipes are original and reliable, and if you like this one, definitely try Isa's other cookbooks. They are always fun - the attitude is refreshing and the recipes WORK.

This cookbook is outstanding in every way. I speak from experience-- I was one of the many testers who worked long and hard with Isa and Terry to make sure that the recipes were perfect and the directions were clear! They are some of the most creative and innovative cooks around, and their food reflects their sublime balance of interesting and comforting.

Some of the best meals I have ever made comes from this book! Those just diving in to the many recipes should keep an eye out for the chickpea cutlets, the seitan picatta, the red lentil and cauliflower curry. . . and those are just a few of my favorite meals. The caesar salad dressing is now a staple in my house! In terms of the deserts, the banana-chocolate-chip bread pudding is amazing, and the rumnog cookies were a huge hit when I made them for friends and family last holiday season.

I hope everyone gets this on their shelf: vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore! It is a worthwhile investment, the food is absolutely sublime.

"Publishers Weekly Review" by , "While most vegan cookbooks are anemic, underfed volumes-some no-brainer pasta recipes, a few things to do with tofu, maybe some oddball desserts-this slam-bang effort from vegan chefs Moskowitz and Romero (Vegan with a Vengeance) is thorough and robust, making admirable use of every fruit and vegetable under the sun, without once asking readers to make do with fake meat products and egg replacements. Instead, the eccentric authors offer dozens of novel, delicious ways to get excited about eating meat-, dairy- and egg-free. Take Southwestern Corn Pudding, a winning casserole rich with coconut milk and an unexpected dash of maple syrup-a likely MVP at your next Thanksgiving (whether it's centered around turkey or tofu). Almost as addictive are Rustic White Beans and Mushrooms, which get their bite from fresh herbs, and Lentils and Rice with Caramelized Onions and Spiced Pita Crisps, a transcendent Middle Eastern comfort food. Vegan breakfasts get overdue attention: sitting in front of a hot stack of velvety Blueberry Corn Pancakes and hearty Blue Flannel Hash, who's going to miss the bacon? Best of all is the wide selection of terrific desserts: everything from Chewy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies to decadent Caramel-Apple-Spice Cupcakes boldly fill the space where most eggless, milkless and butterless cookbooks fear to tread." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)
"Review" by , "[This] unassuming book is full of recipes for which even a carnivore would give up a night of meat."
"Review" by , “Ever the clever wits, Moskowitz and Romero make gourmet vegan cooking accessible in Veganomicon. You’ll love the menu suggestions at the back of the book and the massive index rivaling that of the Joy of Cooking.”
"Review" by , “The tone throughout is upbeat and amusing, especially in the frequent sidebars, which are practical, chatty and engaging without being cutesy.”
"Synopsis" by , The essential guide to mastering the art of vegan cooking: It's easy to live vegan 24/7 with this collection: 250 recipes, menus, and color photos for dishes that taste even better than their non-vegan counterparts. Every recipe in Veganomicon has been kitchen-tested a minimum of seven times by the authors and their intensely engaged fans to ensure user-friendliness, quick preparation, and amazing results. In addition to featuring the authors' signature attitude and experimental, DIY philosophy, Veganomicon has been specifically tailored to what you want most in a cookbook. No other vegan cookbook offers such innovative recipes for all occasions, convenience, easy-to-find ingredients, and gluten-free and tofu-free options.
