I have a lot of cookbooks, but most of them I use only as jumping off points to create my own dishes. This book is an exception, because it's exceptional! I've prepared about half of the recipes (so far) and not one of them has been a dud. Everything is delicious, the recipes are easy to follow, and Moskowitz includes many helpful hints for everything from how to slice a mango to substitutions. The baked goods are divine, and no one in my office even hesitates to accept a vegan cupcake now.

Vegan food has a bad rep for tasting too... health-foody. While I believe there's a time and place for a heap of quinoa mixed with some edamame and not much else, I think that more people would choose to go meat-free if they only knew how much delicious food was out there! Moskowitz brings it with this cookbook. If you're interested in trying some vegan dishes, or trying to show someone that vegan food doesn't have to taste like it was dug out of the ground yesterday, you can do no better than this book! (Though the Veganomicon comes in a close second!)

For a long time now I've felt a sincere inner desire to completely rethink my approach to cooking and finally go animal-free. But I didn't really know where to start. This is the book that gave me direction.

The most distinctively beneficial aspect of this cookbook is that it not only provides a wide array of creative and delicious recipes, but that it also divulges numerous suggestions and morsels of wisdom that give the reader the freedom to take personal creative liberties while preparing the described dishes. After following the more "specific" guidelines provided in the book, I found myself feeling more comfortable experimenting with measurements and substitutions than I've ever been in the past. I was especially inspired by Isa's sections on baking, an area of cookery that--with its mysterious chemical reactions and ubiquitous ingredients--had, for me, always proven to be somewhat baffling.

Besides being a marvelous help and inspiration to one's endeavors in the kitchen, this cookbook proves to be a distinctively enjoyable read. Isa provides humorous insights and reflects on her personal experiences throughout, creating an interestingly intimate aspect to the recipes enclosed therein. In addition, the book is full of helpful asides, indexes, and lists that are beneficial to those recently embarking into the realm of animal-free dining as well as to the well-weathered veteran vegan.

I reiterate the claim that has been made several times already by other reviewers: if you choose to buy only one vegan cookbook, this should be it. But, even if you do not keep to a strictly vegan diet, this cookbook should at least make it to your top five list of cookbooks that are genuinely worth owning.

Wonderful recipes for real, good food. The desserts are fantastic! The author's commentary makes this a fun book to read, not just cook from. Highly recommended.

The rasberry chocolate cake is to die for. I think she was a baker or did a lot of baking. Some of the recipes are too soy heavy for me but her baked goods....YUM.

The book is worth the price just for the Punk Rock Chickpea Gravy, which my omnivore family devours by the bowlful. But the pancakes are great, too, and the text is entertaining, smart, and funny. If you go to theppk.com , you can see some videos of the cooking show, too, to give you a flavor for the sensibility of the cookbook. Really, it's my most-used cookbook these days. You should get it.

"Staff Pick" by ,

When it comes to vegan recipes, Isa Moskowitz is the best. Her first book, Vegan with a Vengeance, is the best of the best. All Moskowitz's books are terrific, but this is the one that I used until it fell apart.

"Publishers Weekly Review" by , "To appreciate this quirky vegan cookbook, readers must welcome the author's offhand, rambling style. A chatty Brooklynite who hosts her own public access cooking show, she scatters stories about her mother, her friends and her politics among recipes for goodies like Fresh Corn Fritters and Curried Split Pea Soup. In one anecdote, she writes that her mother liked the scones from 'one of those overpriced French cafes in Union Square,' prompting the author to create Glazed Orange scones in her mother's honor, and the sweet, rich result rivals the average 'overpriced café' model. BBQ Pomegranate Tofu is actually baked, not barbecued, but still the tofu is rich and smoky, terrific over rice or packed into heroes. Even better, the vegan iterations of Spanakopita and Seitan-Portobello Stroganoff so closely approximate the traditional versions that even the pickiest eaters would happily trade one for the other. And although there's no chicken broth in Matzoh Ball Soup, the vegetable stock is hearty enough to cure the fiercest cold. Best of all, and rare in a vegan cookbook, the author provides several appealing dairy-free desserts that are tasty enough to fool most omnivores, yet unique enough to thrill any vegan who just can't face another tofu ice cream bar." "Review A Day" by , "This cookbook is both explanatory and flexible; the suggestions for substitutions are excellent, and I greatly appreciate her emphasis on economical solutions....Absolutely packed with flavor and suitable for any occasion, the recipes in Vegan with a Vengeance will change your mind about vegan cooking." "Review" by , "It's hip. It's punk. It's high energy. And it's darn fun to read!...This book will be a hit with teens and young adults as well as with adults wanting to add more spice to their own kitchen experiments. Highly recommended."
"Review" by , "This fun and creative book is delicious for people like me, who don't eat pets!"
"Review" by , "[The book] has got plenty of attitude, and the killer recipes to back it up. Watch out Betty Crocker."
"Review" by , "Integrates Isa's NY and punk roots with a sophisticated culinary palate and political nuance that only comes with experience."
