Publisher Comments:

A comprehensive study of the impact of saddle fit on horse and rider health and performance.

Synopsis:

When a horse suddenly develops a performance problem or bad attitude, and neither seem to be remedied by training techniques or medical care, the owner often faces months--"even years--"of frustration and career limitation. Dr. Joyce Harman, veterinarian and respected saddle-fitting expert, claims that 75 percent of horses with such problems are simply reacting to pain caused by ill-fitting saddles. And, as she explains in this thorough, highly illustrated book, poor saddle fit can be corrected with patience and know-how. Here, she teaches the reader: how to determine if a saddle is sound and properly accommodates both horse and rider; how to individualize saddle fit or find a new saddle appropriate in size and style; and how to treat pre-existing back pain and prevent its future occurrence. Dr. Harman owns and operates Harman Equine Clinic, a holistic, primarily equine veterinary practice in Washington, Virginia.

Dr Joyce Harmon is a veterinarian, as well as a chiropractor and acupuncturist. She sees firsthand, the damage a poorly fitted saddle can cause a horse. Her book is filled with illustrations and easy-to-understand language, educating you on the horse's biomechanics and the reasons for effective fit. You learn all about the construction of the saddle, allowing you to be an educated shopper of both new and used gear, and also the proper care to ensure that your saddle lasts as long as possible.
I've watched several saddle-fit videos, and attended numerous clinics, but I've never retained all that much from them, but this book has it all so clearly laid out that I finally have a real understanding. Dr. Harmon also discusses fit issues with numerous body types (I happen to have a flat backed arab with well sprung ribs and a forward shoulder, and very forward girth line) to show why fit is important not just at the start of the ride, but 20 minutes in. You learn about confirmation, cues that the horse is already impaired, suggestions for straightness, leg and hoof care, and she also lists a lengthy recommended reading list.
I now have effective tools for shopping with confidence and the knowledge to protect my horse and support my own riding. This book belongs on the shelf of every rider, trainer and veterinary clinic. I may just buy an extra copy for my own vet!
