Synopsis:

In coastal Africa, a small unit of U.S. Army soldiers is separated from its command and left for dead. Josh and his battle buddies are forced to keep moving to escape the marauding gangs that rule the area, and after a series of terrifying, violent encounters, only a few of them survive. In this haunting, adrenaline-filled war novel, both natives and invaders are almost inhuman, reflecting the horror and strangeness of postmodern military engagements.

The Farther Shore is probably one of the best works of fiction of have read in a while by a new writer. The story packs a lot of action to make it move very quickly, but also has poetically conveyed themes on death, existential dilemmas of the individual, and the ludicris procedures of war and its circumstances (told with due respect to America's armed forces). Well worth the time and the money.

takes awhile to really like this first novel. give it a chance. you'll be thinking about it long after youve finished it. maybe you wont know how you feel about it but it will make you think. good read, fast read.
