Synopses & Reviews

Review:

"Booth, a London publisher who has taught philosophy and theology at Oxford, is not shy about what he expects from readers — he asks that they enter into an 'imaginative exercise' and embrace a world in which 'the basic facts of history can be interpreted in a way which is almost completely the opposite of the way we normally understand them.' That radical re-interpretation is based on the tenets offered in the 'secret teachings' of Rosicrucians, esoteric Freemasonry, Sufism and Kabbalism, among others, with additional references to Eastern religions and Greek and Roman mythology. According to Booth, these teachings inspire the 'cosmic mind' that brought into being the material universe. Booth's history incorporates so many disparate philosophies, many of them far, far away from the mainstream, that it lacks all coherence. And his universe is full of bizarre theories, entertaining primarily for their weirdness. For example, he posits that the angels in the ancient Hebrew Book of Enoch 'who became sexually attracted to human women are none other than the Gods of Olympus.' It is hard to imagine that readers without Booth's predilections for the metaphysical will find this to be anything more than an earnest curiosity. B&w illus." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Synopsis:

In this groundbreaking new work, Booth embarks on an enthralling intellectual tour of the worlds secret histories. Starting from a dangerous premise--that everything taught about the worlds past is corrupted--the author produces nothing short of an alternate history of the past 3,000 years.

The Secret History of the World is an important reference for someone who reads speculative literature. There has always been a fascination with alternate geography, cosmic phenomena, and myth. We want to know what the meaning is, whether we're on borrowed time, if there's a door to another perspective, a solution to the puzzles of the universe. Fixation to such topics across hundreds of years fuels a growing publishing industry. Now digital access to information is easier than ever to find. But I've never seen such a literary and compulsively readable explanation that connects 3,000 years of commonality within human searching as in The Secret History of the World. It's one of those books that makes you realize, what a speck of sand we are in the universe in a literary (more than a physical) context. To me this is a balm, it provides hope somehow. It has been said recently that a western, apocalyptic ideal has grown tired. In it, we are inadequately prepared for a test of how to achieve the next level of civilization. It's not to say that this book is a prediction or a roadmap to the future at all. But with Mark Booth's perceptive description of ongoing hidden works, movements behind the scenes under way for many ages give the reader an extra sense of understanding our our place in time.
