Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic in a cynical world. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite...

Kendra and her brother Seth have no idea their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws give relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, an arcane evil is unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save her family, Fablehaven, and perhaps the world, Kendra must find the courage to do what she fears most.

Review:

"Witty repartee between the central characters, as well as the occasional well-done set piece, isn't enough to hold this hefty debut together." Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis:

More Grimm tales await in the harrowing, hilarious companion to a beloved new classic

Take caution ahead--

Oversize plant life, eerie amphibious royalty, and fear-inducing creatures abound.

Lest you enter with dread.

Follow Jack and Jill as they enter startling new landscapes that may (or may not) be scary, bloody, terrifying, and altogether true.

Step lively, dear reader . . .

Happily ever after isn't cutting it anymore.

In this companion novel to Adam Gidwitz's widely acclaimed, award-winning debut, A Tale Dark & Grimm, Jack and Jill explore a new set of tales from the Brothers Grimm and others, including Jack and the Beanstalk and The Frog Prince.

Synopsis:

When Kendra and Seth go to stay at their grandparents' estate, they discover that it is a sanctuary for magical creatures and that a battle between good and evil is looming.

As a huge fan of Children's Literature, I approached FABLEHAVEN without much hope. It was written by an American (not usually a good thing) and he is young (usually a terrible thing) and it is his first book (three strikes against it before I opened the first page.)
I couldn't have been more wrong. FABLEHAVEN is a treat from the start. Characters are believable and present day to the point you feel you've met them in line at the supermarket. I won't ruin it for you by telling the tale, but you WILL be swept away. I am eager for the next book to come out, and absolutely thrilled that my sons loved it, read it themselves, and claimed to like it better than the previous family favorite, Harry Potter! Five stars are not enough for this wonderful, multi-generational book.

After 30 quick pages I was hooked...
I had the pleasure of meeting the author on one of his book tours, impressed by his presentation, I decided to give it a read. Not an experienced fantasy reader, but once I entered Fablehaven ... my world expanded into a new horizon of literary delight. Fablehaven is ageless, and simple a great read for all. Really looking forward to book #2 in 2007 - Thanks Brandon!
