Jesse Bullington: IMG Abash'd the Devil Stood

I don't believe in evil. It's a word I use, certainly, because words are shortcuts and we all take the short way round from time to time, but that's... Continue »

This field guide to the plants and animals of California and Nevada's Sierra Nevada range, written and illustrated by Laws (a research associate with the California Academy of Sciences), contains some 2700 color illustrations aiding in the identification of some 1700 species native to the region, including trees, wildflowers, ferns, fungi, lichens, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, insects, and more. When hiking in the Sierra Nevada one wants to keep the pack as light as possible. However, this book is worth its weight since it will enhance your trip in every way.
Even if you thought you were reasonably familiar with Sierra plants, birds and animals, you will find yourself reaching for this book to help you identify what you see. The illustrations by the author are delightful and very accurate with extra text info to guide you when species closely resemble each other. I took this book on three trips this last summer and found it much more helpful than any other bird book I have used because of the site specific orientation. The riches of the Sierras unfold like the trail ahead.
