First Christmasby Alastair Macdonald
Synopses & Reviews
The story of the first Christmas is one of the most beloved of all time. It has been retold in song, worship, art, and poetry. Now told from the point of view of Ezekial (Zeke for short), Joseph's trusty donkey who helps him with his work as a carpenter, carries Mary to Bethlehem, and is present in the manger for the birth of Jesus. The First Christmas is written in anapestic tetrameter--the same upbeat, playful, and rhyming rhythm as The Night Before Christmas and much of the poetry by Dr. Seuss. It has a galloping nature that quickly moves the story along, and is a rhythm that children enjoy.
Artist Adel Nassief works in the ancient traditon of Coptic Christian iconography. The iconic art tradition of Coptic Christians--founded and based in Egypt--can be traced back to at least the 3rd century AD. He has created 21 original Coptic icons to accompany this story. Painted with tempera and gold leaf on wood panels, these magnificent works of original art give the book
a timeless and classic quality to be cherished by children and adults alike. Together, Alastair Macdonald's gentle re-telling of The First Christmas and Adel Nassief's striking art, the book is an excellent gift to share with family on Christmas Eve to quiet childrens' spirits and instill in them the real wonder of Christmas.
About the Author
Almost 25 years ago, author Alastair Macdonald went looking for a picture book telling the story of the birth of Jesus Christ to read to his children. Not finding exactly what he wanted, he decided to tell the story in his own words for children and families. He lives with his family in Bermuda and looks forward to the day when he can read First Christmas to his grandchildren.
