Publisher Comments:

For over 85 years The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) has worked to safeguard and maintain the more than 58 federally protected national parks, as well as many of the more than 400 locations supervised by the National Park Service. With more than 340,000 members and 24 regional offices nationwide the NPCA represents the strength of national conservation action, with everyone working to “protect and enhance Americas National Park System for present and future generations.”

Synopsis:

America's national parks and historical sites embody the American spirit. They are windows to our past, homes to some of our rarest plants and animal species, and places where every American can go to find inspiration, peace, and open space. From the iron rails of Steamtown, Pennsylvania to the wilds of Yellowstone, Americas natural parks preserve our culture in as much as they shield our natural world from our own encroachment.

The National Parks: Our American Landscape presents a wonderfully updated photographic survey of one of Americas greatest national treasures. Seen through the eyes of the National Parks Conservation Associations photographer Ian Shive, Americas National Park System come to life through a collection of more than 200 new photographs. Shive's stunning work demonstrates the diversity and awe inspiring beauty of the American wild lands covering the major United States parks from the warm waters of Biscayne, Florida to icy summit of Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park, Alaska.

About the Author

Ian Shive is a member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) and at the age of 30, one of the youngest professional member photographers in the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). A former marketing executive at Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures, Shive has now dedicated himself to his work with leading non-profits like The Nature Conservancy and the NPCA. Shive is a frequent contributor to Popular Photography and Imagine magazine, the worlds largest photography publication, and is the co-founder of Aurora Novus, which specializes in bringing journalists' stories into that filmmaking world via new media films for the web. Shives work has appeared in TIME, U.S. News and World Report, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Outside Magazine, National Geographic, Popular Science, and Monde de la Photographie.

Tom Kiernan joined NPCA as president in January 1998 for what has become his dream job: Heading up an independent organization that defends and protects Americas national parks. Previously, Tom served as president of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire. He was a senior-level official in the Environmental Protection Agencys Office of Air and Radiation, where he won the Gold Medal for his role in achieving consensus with businesses and environmentalists on a pollution-control project at Grand Canyon National Park. He has also held positions with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Arthur Andersen and Company.

Tom is the co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center in Colorado, and as an avid kayaker has tested the white waters throughout the United States and Africa, achieving top-ten ranking in the U.S. in slalom kayaking.

Beautiful imagery of our cherished American Landscape by photographer Ian Shive. He captures in pictures for all of us to enjoy, what most of us would have to wait days or weeks to see, that perfect moment when light, clouds and nature collide to form the most pristine and beautiful scenes.

This book gives new life to the dull pics usually taken of the National Parks. Arsty angles and cool lighting make this book a must have for modern nature enthusiasts. Simply gorgeous!!!

I really liked this book. The photographic images are fascinating and have very detailed captions with both stories behind the images as well as conservation concerns for certain ones. The dual essays from the editors at National Parks association allowed for different perspectives that really gave a fascinating insight from a new perspective. The photos were beautiful but I was glad to have text that accompanied the images in such a detailed way too.
