Nice historical novel for middle grade readers, 9+ The overall story and family situation here has become quite cliché in both young adult and middle grade books (not to mention movies aimed at kids and families): one parent dead, one parent trying to start a new life with the child; headstrong girl eager for adventure, etc. But Mystery at Chilkoot Pass makes up for such things with a vivid, richly told and well researched story that will inform without preaching or growing tedious. The Yukon Gold Rush took place only a little over a century ago and it's an awe-inspiring chapter in U.S. and Canadian history that should not be overlooked in the classroom or at home.
