of all sarah waters' books, tipping the velvet is by far her strongest & most vivid.

the characters & setting are lush & scandalous, while the historical research & accuracy give it its depth & resonance.

tipping the velvet gives its reader a sense of victorian times, and the trials & tribulations a young lesbian could endure as the world changes all around her. it's lovely!

i loved tipping the velvet so much as a reader...that i drove cross-country on a whirlwind weekend trip to attend a film festival to see the book come to life. tipping the velvet is one of those books you never want to end.
