Bull of the Woods Volume 2by J. R. Williams
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:This is not a book that needs a lot of selling copy on the back cover. It is the wonderful, gentle humor of J.R. Williams, the creator of Out Our Way. Although J.R. Williams died nearly 50 years ago, he was an inspiration for a whole generation of cartoonists who followed him. Charles Schulz of Peanuts fame once said, "I worked once at Northwest Printing and Binding as a delivery boy and office boy, and one day I drew a cartoon of the man who worked the big cutting machine and how proud he was when he got a new board to stand on. I was inspired, of course, by J.R. Williams and that type of down-home humor." All of The Bull of the Woods cartoons are about machine shops and all are from the 1920s and 1930s. Williams had been a machinist for a number of years and was able to draw on his own machine shop experience when creating these cartoons. He once said of his shop foreman, "The Bull was hardboiled, perhaps, but he was kind. He must have been, or I certainly should have been fired. He said to me one day with fine sarcasm, "Pardon my rudeness. You've been turning out two cartoons a day and one shaft a day on this machine. Couldn't you make it two shafts and one cartoon a day? This is a machine shop." What Our Readers Are SayingAdd a comment for a chance to win!Average customer rating based on 1 comment:![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
