Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Alter Ego is a cool concept book, presenting the phenomenon of the contemporary avatar-the virtual characters gamers choose and design to engage in 3D worlds online. Portraits of gamers from the United States, Europe, China, and Japan (including leading figures of the gaming world) are paired with digital images of their alter egos, graphically dramatizing the gap between fantasy and reality.

With an introduction by one of digital culture's leading observers, and a glossary of relevant terms, each of the seventy pairs of images are accompanied by detailed gamers'profiles. Sometimes hilarious and always visually exciting, Alter Ego also serves as a guide to the new world of the avatar and is a serious contribution to the debate about the future of society in the digital age.

Synopsis:

Photographer Robbie Cooper's Alter Ego explores personal and social identities being shaped in the metaverse at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Portraits of online gamers and virtual-world participants from America, Asia and Europe are paired with images of their avatars, with profiles of their real-world and virtual characters. The book is both an entertainment and a serious look at a phenomenon that is shaping the future of human interaction. With an introduction by Julian Dibbell and interviews and a glossary by Tracy Spaight.

This brilliant work is a reflection of an ancient yearning to find our true selves. At this current time, people are compelled to delve deeply in order to extract that which is solid. The core of our essence.

Ancient Hindu illustrations by Parasara validate and calibrate this effort. People are naturally drawn to certain characteristics defining their inner being and as artists they are able to interpret the ancient yearning into a viewable form of themselves. Gender, race, or occupation appears to take a backseat to the date of birth in determining their true self.

Bravo Mr. Cooper, your work is truly an artistic exploration of self, manifested. A tool previously unavailable for millennia.

The below site has nothing for sale, I am listing it because it validates the fine work in the book.
