Jon Steele: IMG Hello, I Must Be Going

There's a bench in Cully, Switzerland. It's in a little park tucked up against the shore of Lake Geneva. I go there a lot to just sit and think, or... Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Sid Miller, editor of the Burnside Review, explores seven routes from the coast to the mountains, from inner-city Portland to the Idaho border. Dot-to-Dot, Oregon, a collection of fifty poems, travels through the cities, towns, and monuments of Oregon. Using these locales as a background, three voices narrate the author's loving but critical relationship with the state he calls home.

About the Author

Sid Miller has fairly well covered the West, born in Hawaii, raised in California, educated in Arizona and settled in Portland. His poems have appeared widely. He is the founder and editor of the Burnside Review, has two chapbooks in print, and two full-length collections: Nixon on the Piano and Dot-to-Dot, Oregon

The concept for this book of poetry is clever: taking a trip through Oregon, to many places that perhaps wouldn’t ordinarily be on a tourist’s list of hot spots (think Philomath instead of the Gorge). The result is rather gritty, darkly humorous snapshots of the author’s experiences within Oregon. As a native Oregonian and a small-town girl, I understood Sid Miller’s ambiguous relationship with the state; I think anyone who has spent time in the Pacific Northwest and who likes poetry would appreciate this read.

As an Oregonian, I loved poems about towns I had been to. With some of the places I am more familiar with, I could feel Sid’s movement through the areas, and loved how he had chosen his driving path because I have driven those paths too. I love local literature because Oregon is not a place many people choose to write about, or at least not as many are published. Sid Miller brings a voice to the overall area that is not often seen, especially in small towns like Hermiston where my mother grew up, or the nontourist towns on the coast, like Reedsport.

I really liked the idea behind this collection of poems of taking a road trip through Oregon. Many of Oregon's towns and cities get through own poem based off of the author's first impressions as he drives through for a couple of hours. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Oregon and the variety it provides in scenery and people. This is also a fun book to read if you want to learn more about Oregon but can't travel a lot.
