One would not expect a book about one person's struggles with dizziness and balance problems to be a real page turner but that is exactly how I found Finding Balance: Healing from a Decade of Vestibular Disorders. It is a remarkable book not only for someone with a long history of balance problems but also for someone like myself who suffers from intermittent but regular bouts of vertigo. The medical information is fascinating and informative and the life lessons are transformative. Not only a "great read", but an important resource for anyone facing seemingly insurmountable problems or simple searching for answers about living.

When you are sitting in bed holding your head in your hands in a futile attempt to keep the room from spinning, it is enormously comforting to read about someone who has been through what you are going through. It is reassuring to know you are not crazy, with an illness not visible to others, you are not alone and importantly, that someone else has found a path through the illness. Finding Balance Healing from a Decade of Vestibular Disorders by Sue Hickey was obviously written by a “master” patient. The author’s years of clearly and critically observed experience provide enormous value to other vestibular patients and their close friends and family. I think as well it will provide healthcare professionals an understanding they may not have of their patients’ daily struggles. Chapters end with a series of valuable practical tips and insights that serve to coach and support you through each step of the journey of healing from vestibular disorders, and rebuilding a life within the limits of what dizziness, vertigo and the other symptoms allow. So it is not only a uniquely valuable book about finding balance in a malfunctioning vestibular system, but in the end it is an eloquent story about finding balance in life itself. This is a very good book, both moving and useful. It will become a classic in the field.

"Synopsis" by ,
Over 10 million adults in the United States have chronic problems with dizziness and imbalance – vestibular problems. This compares to 400,000 with multiple sclerosis or 1.5 million with autism for example, both chronic illnesses with much greater name recognition. Vestibular problems are difficult to diagnose and treat. While vestibular problems come with various medical names (Menieres, Perilymph Fistula, Endolymphatic Hydrops, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Mal de Debarquement Balance (MdDS) and others) they present a common challenge for the affected person on how to deal with the dizziness and eventually find balance.

Finding Balance addresses over a decade of illness, from the initial two years searching for a diagnosis, through the long years of treatment and finally to the period of rebuilding a life within the confines of what dizziness and vertigo will allow. Finding Balance provides a detailed description of symptoms, what can trigger them, the emotional reactions to symptoms, how to recognize their subtle differences, and how to track them in order to contribute to your diagnosis. It also emphasizes the patient's responsibility for healing and eventually how to find the inner balance in life that will be necessary to equitably live with these symptoms over time.
