Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

He spent more than four years on the road — and returned with over 1000 pictures from 130 countries. Uwe Ommer, commercial photographer, took leave from his everyday work in order to photograph families typical of various countries, regions, and social and cultural environments. These portraits form the basis of 1000 Families — The Family Album of Planet Earth — a testimony to the institution of family at the beginning of the third millennium.

Synopsis:

One thousand families — literally! Photographer Uwe Ommer shares with us his newly completed four-year project, a ""Family Album of Planet Earth"". Overwhelming in its magnitude, this project is truly extraordinary. Stopping in over 150 countries in all corners of the world, Ommer carefully selected the families who best reflected each society's traditions and social conditions. Many of the portraits have appeared in exhibitions and magazines during the course of the project; now that the work is finished, Taschen brings it all to you in one volume.

Ommer chose to photograph each family in the same way, against a white background and with identical lighting. All of the traditional elements of a documentary photograph are removed, leaving only the people themselves. The result is astonishing. You'll see yourself in these pages, and maybe not just in the families that look like yours. Seeing all of these families smiling for the camera makes the world feel a little smaller; our differences are not as profound as we may think.

I found this book after seeing the photo display of Ommer's work in a Cork City park. I was SO VERY EXCITED and regularly enjoy the photography (I am a visual learner) of the families. It is fun to imagine stories about the people and I do this with my little friend. Transit is the other book that I have and appreciate. Uwe Ommer has provided us with a glimpse into the lives of people worldwide. While I can't travel much, these companion books allow me to look, dream and appreciate the many peoples of the world.
