Jesse Bullington: IMG Abash'd the Devil Stood

I don't believe in evil. It's a word I use, certainly, because words are shortcuts and we all take the short way round from time to time, but that's... Continue »

Publisher Comments:

I let him take my hand. The cold blue flame in his eyes held me, seared me. "Do you feel it?" he asked. "It's a warm tingle, isn't it? In your hands, moving up your arms, like a current."

"No." My hands tingled with warmth. It moved up my arms like a current.

When Gwen and Adrian meet, they unlock each other's latent psychic powers. It's too bad they can't stand each other, don't trust each other, and do everything they can to manipulate each other. Will they use their power to save lives? Or will it destroy them both? Written in alternating voices, this is a compelling, suspenseful novel about power in all its forms — psychic, physical, sexual, romantic.

Review:

"Jacobs's (The Same Difference) semi-intense cross between a juicy high school melodrama and an experiment in teen E.S.P. gone haywire, flip-flops from scintillating to campy. Told in the alternating voices of two 17-year-olds-Gwen (the 'Watcher') and Adrian (the receiver)-the at times heavy-handed story unfolds as the teens learn how to brandish their unwieldy psychic powers. While Gwen attempts to interpret her 'visions' so that she can use them as story leads for the town newspaper (she's a photographer), she also grapples with her lust for Adrian and the fact that he seems to be inexplicably drawn to her overweight-and-thick-glasses-self. Conversely, the too-cool-for-school Adrian blatantly feeds off of Gwen's powers (he can read minds, thanks to her) while trying to figure out why he finds her so attractive. Clearly, the two are destined for each other, yet push each other away-the classic 'you always want what you can't have' scheme that makes romance novels so enticing. This novel may disappoint those looking for deeper, philosophical meaning sans dramatic overtones ('If I can't have you, I don't want The Power'), but readers who are hoping for a fun, somewhat fantastical read where things don't make sense (and don't necessarily have to) will likely be titillated. Ages 12-up." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"This fast-paced plunge into ESP effectively blends the occult with the turmoil of adolescent romance." School Library Journal

Review:

"What will keep readers going are Gwen and, particularly, compelling Adrian. The couple are worth rooting for despite the clunky way in which their story plays out." Booklist

Review:

"[A] bewitchingly pulpy and enjoyable fast read." Kirkus Reviews
