Over time the fort is downgraded and Giovanni's ambitions fade - until the day the enemy begins massing on the desolate steppe...

although I haven't read this translation, the original
is very evocative and written in such a simple elegant
style it could be used beautifully as an italian textbook
for translation as well being a voyage into a labyinthine world.
