Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This new book brings to light an artist important to the early Modernist movement who, curiously, fell off the modern art map. Flandrin, a pupil of Gustave Moreau, was one of the most prominent figures in 19th c. art. It tells a great deal about avant-garde art of the early 20th c. Flandrin was part of the group that included Matisse, Albert Marquet and Georges Rouault who met in Moreau's studio and was a major force even among these innovators — a torchbearer of "l'art vivant." His work touched Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism and later Modernist art. Along with an essay by the Ashmolean's Jon Whiteley, Genevieve Lacambre of the Musee d'Orsay has written an essay in French. Many of the illustrations have never been seen before. (Ashmolean Museum)
