Publisher Comments:

Valencia is Spain's third largest city and a hotbed of vibrant street art. While elaborate murals, wheat pastes and stencils can be found throughout the city, the scene's epicenter is Barrio del Carmen, the neighborhood that comprises Valencia's old town. In this part of the city, a great number of aging structures have been razed to make room for new developments. The building lots are usually surrounded by temporary walls, which Valencia's most prolific street artists use as their canvases. Textura gathers together Luz Martín's photographs of this ephemeral phenomenon--preserving it from being painted over. The book is bundled with royalty-free images, for designers to use in their own work.

A Sophisticated Survey of the Graffiti of Valencia, Spain

Luz Martin has created what everyone hopes will be said of writer/photographers who document aspects of cities that are significant culturally. In this very beautifully designed and produced volume Martin not only writes well about the differences between the street art of London and the street art of Valencia, Spain, she also wisely has gathered artist statements from the primary practitioners of street art and delivers those to us, well illustrated, with the text in both Spanish and English.

And after this introduction of the artists and an introduction that explains how the light and color of the streets in Valencia are incorporated into the final significance of the street art, she wastes no time in getting to what the book is all about. Her photography is excellent, managing to not only give us the big picture of entire walls of buildings with the decor imposed on them, but she also takes the time to give details of the most interesting of the artworks. Her details respectfully select out alterations in the texture of the walls - tiles, stucco surfaces, fences, doorways, painted over fixtures - in the last section of the book, a section more about those textural differences than about the art. And in closing her book on Valencia Street Art she makes her point that it is not only the work of the artists she honors, but the inherent beauty of the streets of Valencia that invite us to experience this Spanish work of art as a whole! This book is not only a fine art book and a pinnacle of book design, it is also an invitation to appreciate a locale that celebrates art in its own special way.
