About the Author

A Pennsylvania native, Gaelen Foley holds a B.A. in English literature from S.U.N.Y. College at Fredonia. It was while studying the Romantic poets, such as Wordsworth, Byron, and Shelley, that she first became interested in the Regency period, in which her novels are set. After college, she moonlighted as a waitress for five years to keep her daylight hours free for writing and honing her craft. Her dedication paid off in 1998 when Ballantine published her first novel, The Pirate Prince, which went on to win the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award for Best First Historical Romance. Since then, her books have won the National Readers Choice Award, the Booksellers Best Award, the Colorado Award of Excellence, the Beacon, and for two years running, the esteemed Golden Leaf.

Wow. Riveting plot, very believable characters. I actually put reading this one off for a while because I wasn't particularly intrigued by Lizzie's character, so I thought her novel would be a dull read. Boy was I wrong! Devlin is everything perfect in a hero -- handsome, but tormented by a dark past, passionate, yet reluctant to love. Lizzie is portrayed wonderfully in this novel, and to be fair, I don't think the other books in the Knight series really do her much justice in portraying her as the "plain, spinsterish, prude" outsider. She is so much more than that, and I'm really glad I took the time to read this novel. Devlin couldn't have been a more perfect hero to complement her. It was great seeing her finally break out of her shell, take charge of her life, show London what she is really about without compromising her integrity, and acquire a gorgeous hero in the process. The story-line was also great, I loved how Foley explores the depths of the secondary characters, and especially the inner-workings of the villain, Carstairs. Everything was entirely believable, the characters were perfect, and the plot moved quickly with never a dull moment. Foley's novels all tend to be a bit dark and dramatic in setting, which is what I think adds to their charm. Do not miss out on this one -- I rank it up there with The Duke and lady of Desire.
