Jesse Bullington: IMG Abash'd the Devil Stood

I don't believe in evil. It's a word I use, certainly, because words are shortcuts and we all take the short way round from time to time, but that's... Continue »

Publisher Comments:

With a New Afterword by the Author

Originally published nearly forty years ago and continuously in print since, The Collected Works of Billy the Kid introduced one of our most beloved writers and has become a classic of our day.

Drawing on contemporary accounts, period photographs, dime novels, and his own prodigious fund of empathy and imagination, Michael Ondaatje's visionary novel traces the legendary outlaw's passage across the blasted landscape of 1880 New Mexico and the collective unconscious of his country. Here is a virtuoso synthesis of storytelling, history, and myth by a writer who brings us back to our familiar legends with a renewed sense of wonder.

Taut, tight, little work. Built of pseudo clippings and interviews, of reflections. Many consider this one of his best, rawest works. Frame it as poetry and you'll enjoy it.

Way ahead of it's time, Ondaatje provides a collage of a western hero, in a boyish idolism of a cold blooded killer.
