Devil Bones (Temperance Brennan Novels)

by Kathy Reichs

Devil Bones (Temperance Brennan Novels) Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Following her most successful book to date, Kathy Reichs — international number one bestselling author, forensic anthropologist, and producer of the Fox television hit Bones — returns to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Temperance Brennan encounters a deadly mix of voodoo, Santería, and devil worship in her quest to identify two young victims.

In a house under renovation, a plumber uncovers a cellar no one knew about, and makes a rather grisly discovery — a decapitated chicken, animal bones, and cauldrons containing beads, feathers, and other relics of religious ceremonies. In the center of the shrine, there is the skull of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, on a nearby lakeshore, the headless body of a teenage boy is found by a man walking his dog.

Nothing is clear — neither when the deaths occurred, nor where. Was the skull brought to the cellar or was the girl murdered there? Why is the boy's body remarkably well preserved? Led by a preacher turned politician, citizen vigilantes blame devil worshippers and Wiccans. They begin a witch hunt, intent on seeking revenge.

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan — "five-five, feisty, and forty-plus" — is called in to investigate, and a complex and gripping tale unfolds in this, Kathy Reichs's eleventh taut, always surprising, scientifically fascinating mystery.

With a popular series on Fox — now in its third season and in full syndication — Kathy Reichs has established herself as the dominant talent in forensic mystery writing. Devil Bones features Reichs's signature blend of forensic descriptions that "chill to the bone" (Entertainment Weekly) and the surprising plot twists that have made her books phenomenal bestsellers in the United States and around the world.

From Our Staff:

Kathy Reichs’s series about forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan may disappoint some readers who are only familiar with the character from the television show, Bones; however, the novels provide a depth and substance missing from the television drama. Devil Bones takes Dr. Brennan deep into an investigation of a strange and sinister discovery made during the remodelling of one of Charlotte, North Carolina’s historic homes. Brennan and her police contact are confronted with the possibility that a group of Satanists is operating in the area. Reichs carefully constructs a plot that is complex and filled with plenty of forensic details for those readers who crave more than a CSI montage. The hidden world of Wicca, Santeria, and Voodoo is uncovered, leading to some unusual discoveries, and Brennan finds herself pulled into a world she didn’t know existed. Bad guys abound, and the author holds her cards close to her vest, building suspense along the way. Devil Bones is one of the best books in Reichs’s Temperance Brennan series. As always, I found myself speculating as to how soon the author will provide me with another glimpse into the world of this fascinating character.

Review:

"Dr. Temperance Brennan's quest to identify two corpses pits her against citizen vigilantes intent on a witch-hunt in bestseller Reichs's exciting 11th thriller to feature the forensic anthropologist (after 2007's Bones to Ashes). While working in Charlotte, N.C., Brennan investigates remains unearthed during a housing renovation and discovers disturbing clues possibly pointing to voodoo or Santeria. She must determine if the bones, including the skull of a teenage girl, are linked to an unidentified headless torso found in a nearby lake. Intent on using the deaths as the cornerstone of his crusade against immorality, fundamentalist preacher turned politician Boyce Lingo claims that the bodies bear the mark of devil worshippers. With the help of Det. Erskine 'Skinny' Slidell, Brennan unearths a tangled web of dirty politics, religious persecution and male prostitution. Reichs, whose work inspired the hit TV series Bones, once again expertly blends science and complex character development." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"Loved it! I'm amazed by how seamlessly Reichs makes the transition from forensic jargon to snappy, funny dialogue — scientist to great storyteller. What's not to admire and envy?" — Sandra Brown, author of Play Dirty

Review:

"Reichs is a standout...[with] a formidable way of incorporating science with character and plot.... Her expertise is snappily and entertainingly delivered." — Booklist
