Publisher Comments:

Hot on the trail of her much talked-about debut, Lip Service, M.J. Rose once again explores the dark corners of the human psyche in a riveting and erotic tale of love, lust...and betrayal.

Although everyone thinks she's being paranoid, psychotherapist Jordan Sloan knows better. Haunted by the long-ago murder of her father, she learns that his killer has been paroled and she instantly fears his revenge. Only she knows the dark secret of her relationship with Mallory — and the depth of her deception in providing the testimony that put him away. She sees him in shadows, in mirrors, in photographs her teenage daughter takes in the park....

Still suffering the bruises of her husband's betrayal, Jordan grapples with ambiguous emotions even as she is drawn again to her estranged spouse. Clinging desperately to the hard-earned stability of her life, she maneuvers through the meshwork of love's fragile bonds, layers of longing, and the chaos that is human relationships. All the while, a mysterious new patient seems intent on contributing to Jordan's unraveling. For as she struggles to prove that her fear of Mallory is justified, she also wrestles with how it might feel to finally forgive Robert's infidelity.

M.J. Rose has crafted a rare and evocative new novel of spellbinding energy, as a woman come to terms with her own life — assuming she will continue to enjoy the luxury of living it.

"The combination of sleaze and suspense should please Rose's fans." Library Journal

"Rose's take on the thriller formula is spiced up by a touch of melodrama: altogether, a satisfying blend." Kirkus Reviews

Predictable chick-lit suspense story (2.6 *s)

Centered on Greenwich psychotherapist Jordan Sloan and her estranged husband Robert, her hip, know-it-all teenage daughter Lilly, and the indelible imprint of her father’s murder in his jewelry store when she was teenager, this book is a rather jerky example of chick lit placed in a thin layer of suspense. Jordan is alarmed to discover that her father’s killer has just been released after serving eighteen years of a prison sentence; but she isn’t buying his rehabilitation, despite assurances, more like wishful thinking, from all around. Warning signs are blissfully ignored. Lilly plays the part of the prematurely, Zen-like, wise teenager, who counsels her mother to accept that people can change their proclivities, like a killer or her unfaithful father, and that her own complete submission to her first love, a Yale man, is perfectly healthy. No outside advice please. And then there is the sexy, femme fatale who has just become her patient and has every intention of critiquing Jordan’s life much to her discomfort.

In addition to pulling the strings of these story threads, the author wishes to make some statement about infidelity: its frequency, consequences both short and long term, potential benefits, and the possibilities of moving beyond or overcoming it all. There is a modicum of insight but it’s all Psych 101 which dovetails with a plot that is so incredibly predictable, that it almost seems intentional. The characters are equally unsurprising and remarkably naive. Basically a simplistic little story, involving some amazingly unaware, even self-centered, people, with a couple of steamy scenes thrown in that ends well. Very quick read. Three stars is a generous rating.
