Jesse Bullington: IMG Abash'd the Devil Stood

I don't believe in evil. It's a word I use, certainly, because words are shortcuts and we all take the short way round from time to time, but that's... Continue »

What mad genius hides behind the moniker Alan Moore? For those unfamiliar with his work, Alan Moore made comic books "respectable" in the mid-80's with his landmark graphic novel Watchmen, introducing dark themes and intellectualism to a medium long thought only for children. Recently he has stepped in to save comics again, this time from the very brooding he instilled in them, with a return to the superhero format. Promethea is a work of sheer genius blending fact and fiction into something more than just a comic book. Yes, it can be read as a traditional narrative (and an exciting one at that!), but as Sophie Bangs (Promethea's current incarnation/alter ego) learns the nature of her powers we also learn about the relationship between imagination and reality — and the means to navigate them through the symbolism of magic.

Publisher Comments:

University student Sophie Bangs lives in a present-day New York City similar to our own, but dominated by science. Its multilevel constructions glow with neon, glimmer with talking billboards and gleam in the headlights of floating cars. But what interests Sophie isn't science, it's myth: specifically the recurring myths and stories of a mystic warrior woman named Promethea, whose orgins seem to emerge from the dim memories of a 5th century Egypt, when a young girl fleeting from her father's murderers slips somehow into the realm of ancient gods, The Immateria.

Researching a fictional trail through centuries, Sophie calls on the widow of the most recent Promethea scribe, Barbara Shelley, and quickly finds herself swept into a terrifying world of dark, deadly spirits and desparate heroics. In a dizzying chase across the city, Barbara begins to reveal the truth behind the Promethea stories, as she and Sophie struggle to save their own lives! Sophie has the key to their rescue...the power is within her. Will she have the resolve to use it? Join her on this journey of discovery through beautifully illustrated mystic realms and sorcerous perils as Sophie Bangs strives to take on the power of Promethea!
