Publisher Comments:

Tricia Yost's manuscript came to me on a cold and wet day when I was forced to forego cigarettes and drink inside the coffeeshop, among the priapic college geeks and street people, the overflow from the adult foster care community, and a little subculture of Indian, Thai, Hmung, and Montanard communities that have grown up around the small affordable shops one step ahead of the wrecking ball — when will these ever come together again in life? You get one chance to see the beautiful lugs with hairy legs and tattoos before they settle for some unfortunate nerd and pretend for the rest of their lives college never happened. Was there a time when it was more than mere fashion to love for love itself?

Tricia's book took me to such a time, when an unknown photographer invented American lesbian erotica out of the heat and torment of her own love, a time before the wars, a century ago, a time when innocence forgave innocents. When love in a sunlit porch didn't need a political affirmation to reach full flower. Tricia sets up a template featuring a photographer named Alice and her lover named Trude. And through this magic lantern, we see our own time. We reclaim what was once a birthright — not just sexual identity, but identity itself.

Synopsis:

First Things is a collection of personal and persona poems exploring the life and work of Alice Austen, a photographer who lived on Staten Island in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Given a camera at the age of eleven, Alice took over 1,000 photographs of life in Lower Manhattan and of her immediate surroundings on Staten Island. While she didn't make a career out of photography, her acute artistic and social sensibilities seal her passion for the art form.
