Equally accessible to college students as well as general readers, this book is the most succint and accessible introduction to Paul Tillich's ideas about religion. This is a graceful and digestible volume. In it, one of the best known theologians, Tillich, explores the idea of faith in all its dimensions defining the subject in the process. As Reinhold Niebuhr wrote in the New York Times Book Review, “ Paul Tillich is a giant among us.”

In this fascinating yet accessible study of all things faith, Tillich brilliantly tears down many common myths about faith – such as the contention that reason and faith oppose each other – while arguing that all people have faith (which he defines as ultimate concern), they just have faith in different things. Interesting (and certainly not preachy) even for those who don’t consider themselves spiritual or religious, and a must read for those that do, this book will blow your mind (in a good way, of course) and challenge your notions of God, being, religious symbols (including scripture), salvation, truth, and, of course, faith. For example, he argues that the “presupposition…that God is a being, acting in time and space, dwelling in a special place, affecting the course of events and being affected by them like any other being in the universe,” is idolatrous, because taking the symbol of God literally “deprives God of his ultimacy and…of his majesty. It draws him down to the level of that which is not ultimate, the finite and conditional” (pgs. 59-60). At all intrigued, or even offended? Then do yourself a favor and pick up this book. It’ll change your life. (And if enough people do, religious intolerance and destructive fundamentalism just might become a thing of the past.)
