Welcome to Guards! Guards!, the eighth book in Terry Pratchetts legendary Discworld series.

Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all...). How did it get there? How is the Unique and Supreme Lodge of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night involved? Can the Ankh-Morpork City Watch restore order - and the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork to power?

Magic, mayhem, and a marauding dragon...who could ask for anything more?

Synopsis:

Here there be dragons...and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. This is an excellent place to enter the Discworld series. It is past Pratchett's early fumbling with the form, and provides a first look at one of his stock character sets, who recur in many later Discworld novels.

It's also a wonderful introduction to Terry Pratchett, a lapidary writer who breaks the bonds of comic fantasy to write books that should be of interest to anyone who reads fiction.

Every Discworld novel I read just makes me want to read more. Capt Vimes of the Night Watch has to try to save the city from a huge and menacing dragon that has been conjured from the evil mind of a sorcerer. He gets help (reluctantly) from the rest of the Watch, including the newest, most gung-ho member, Carrot, who just might be the heir to the throne.

A group of men summoning a dragon for nefarious purposes, a young hero, raised far away by dwarves, coming to his first city, a group of rather incompetent guards; these are common enough cliches in fantasy stories, but Pratchett turns them on their head and makes them hilarious. Fooling with cliches and assumptions, he keeps you on your toes by throwing you for a loop when things don't follow along a standard storyline.

This was the first of Prachett's books I had read, as I have always been daunted by the length of his Discworld series. I live in a rural area, and getting stuck in the middle of a series for an extended length of time because you can't get the rest of the books is not at all fun.

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of this author's work though, as this was quite possibly the best comedic fantasy I have read. His writing is witty and sharp, with plenty of laugh out loud spots. (Per-maybe-haps best not read in public, as you get odd looks and people edge away when you sit there laughing and giggling over a book.)
