Publisher Comments:

Arriving anonymously at a Congo leper village, he is diagnosed as the mental equivalent of a "burnt-out case", a leper who has gone through a stage of mutilation. However, as Querry loses himself in work for the lepers his disease of mind slowly approaches a cure. Then the white community finds out who Querry is...

Those familiar with Greene's vast oeuvre will find many familiar themes here, including spiritual malaise, Englishmen adrift in another country, drinking, lost and recovered faith, and a rather narrow view of women. A famous architect gives it all up and moves to an obscure part of Africa to work in a leper colony, only to find he can't escape his fame. It has some similarities to "Heart of the Matter," arguably Greene's masterpiece.
