one of the most gut-wrenching examples of a man’s life spiraling out of control amidst the effort of trying to find some...

...and the control he seeks is within his writing...

brutal and beautiful...a masterpiece of the inner soul and the inner mind caught within a dialogue of closed-off pretensions and open revelations...

I just started re-reading this again- it's one of my favorites. The last time that I read it, I finished it by driving to the Bixby Bridge at Big Sur and read the poem "Sea" while sitting, overlooking the beach and the Pacific Ocean. This morning I finished chapter 10: "...so I go into the bus station and clean up and change and pack things away, stow the bag in the locker, buy the bus ticket, and go limping quietly in the blue fog streets of Monterey evening feeling light as a feather and happy as a millionaire---The last time I ever hitch hiked---And NO RIDES a sign." One of the saddest things I have ever read. If you love Kerouac from reading On the Road or The Dharma Bums, but haven't read Big Sur, get it now: you don't yet know Jack.
