Book News Annotation:

Higson and Roe (both mathematics, Pennsylvania State U.) share the essential ideas of the tool for conveying information about algebraic topology, functional analysis, and geometry. They expect readers to have completed a basic course in functional analysis and have had some exposure to homological mathematics for the first seven chapters, which could serve as a text for a graduate course introducing K- homology. The other five chapters introduce Kasparov theory and become more sophisticated, requiring readers to supply at least some of their own details, in addition, many of the examples come from elliptic operator theory, and so require some familiarity with the machinery of smooth manifolds and vector bundles.
