About the Author

HILARY M. CAREY  is Associate Professor of History at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. From 2004-2006 she was Keith Cameron Professor of Australian History at University College Dublin. She is the author of Believing in Australia (Allen & Unwin 1996) and is currently writing a history of colonial missions. She also writes on the history of medieval astrology (though not at the same time).
