Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Stephen Hawking has beenan iconic figure inphysics for the last half a century, making many groundbreaking discoveries on the nature of the universe. Yet while his mind roams to the farthest corners of reality, his body has become increasingly trapped bythe advanceof Lou Gehrigs disease, whichhas bound himto awheelchair, without speech or movement except for a few facial muscles. Told in his youth that he would not live past his 20s, Hawking will turn 70 in 2012, and today he continues to inspire millions, drawing rock-concert-sized crowds wherever he lectures. Science writer Kitty Ferguson has been working with Stephen Hawking for decades, and producedan internationally bestsellingbiography of his life in 1992. Now, she brings his life as well as his scientific discoveries up-to-date. This is a remarkable look at how one of the greatest scientific mind alive overcame the odds to become the truly inspirational figure he is today.

Review:

"Ferguson replaces the iconic but static image of cosmologist Hawking with flesh and blood in this vivid portrait. This is familiar terrain for Ferguson, who built such good rapport with Hawking while researching her book Stephen Hawking: A Quest for a Theory of Everything some 20 years ago, that he asked her to consult on his own book, The Universe in a Nutshell. Hawking grew from a 'rather lazy' student to a pioneering cosmologist in an era when the field was regarded as little more than a pseudoscience. Diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) early in graduate school, he defeated the odds and will soon celebrate his 70th birthday. Through interviews with Hawking and his colleagues, friends, and family, Ferguson builds a complete picture of Hawking's life, from his tireless work to explain our universe to his notorious driving, playful appearances on Star Trek, The Simpsons, and other shows, campaigning to improve the lives of the disabled, and his family life, with special attention to his relationship with his first wife, Jane, whose sacrifices allowed him to focus on his work. In the end, Ferguson captures the very full life and work of one of the most vibrant minds of our time." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Synopsis:

Stephen Hawking is one of the most remarkable figures of our age--bestselling author of A Brief History of Time, celebrated theoretical physicist, and an inspiration as he exhibits grace, dignity, and courage while coping with devastating disability. With race access to Hawking, including childhood photos and in-depth research, award-winning author Kitty Ferguson has created a rich and comprehensive picture of Hawking's life: his childhood; the heartbreaking ALS diagnosis when he was a first-year graduate student; his long personal battle for survival in pursuit of a scientific understanding of the universe; and his rise to international fame. Ferguson uses her gift for translating the language of theoretical physics into the language of the rest of us to make Hawking's scientific work accessible. Stephen Hawking is an insightful, absorbing, and definitive account of an extraordinary life and a brilliant mind.

About the Author

Kitty Ferguson has been working with Stephen Hawking for over a decade and has witnessed firsthand his incredible intelligence and the difficulty he faces in day-to-day life as a result of Lou Gehrigs disease. While working with Hawking she gained his respect for her ability to translate complex scientific ideas into language a general reader can understand, andworked with him to ensure The Universe in a Nutshell was accessible to general readers. The author of ten books herself, including The Fire in the Equations, Prisons of Light, Measuring the Universe, Tycho & Kepler, and The Music of Pythagoras, Ferguson has been interviewed by Forbes, PBS, and BBC. She lectures widely, including at Syracuse University, Goddard Space Science Center, the Hayden Planetarium in NYC, The Nobel Peace Prize Forum, and Rutgers, and writes the column "Big Questions On-line" for the Templeton Foundation. Ferguson and her husband split their time between Bluffton, SC and Cambridge, England.
