Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

As part of a new interest in the study of ritual that has arisen within the last few years, Standaert (sinology, Katholieke U. Leuven, Belgium) explores the role of ritual in the exchange between cultures, by looking at what happened to funerary ritual after the European and Chinese ritual traditions came into contact with each other. Some of the study has been delivered or published before. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Synopsis:

The death of Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci in China in 1610 was the occasion for demonstrations of Western rituals appropriate for a Catholic priest and also of Chinese rituals appropriate to the country hosting the Jesuit community. This book explores the role of ritual--specifically rites related to death and funerals--in cross-cultural exchange, demonstrating a gradual interweaving of Chinese and European ritual practices at all levels of interaction in China. Nicholas Standaert is professor of Sinology at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
