Book News Annotation:

Reports on the many changes in auditory neuroscience since the previous meeting in 1987. The 56 papers cover general aspects, cochlear nuclei, the superior olivary complex and lateral lemniscus, the auditory midbrain and forebrain, mechanisms of sound localization, processing vocalization and speech, and plasticity and pathological processes. Among the specific topics are the role of the mammalian forebrain in hearing, circuits of the dorsal cochlear nucleus, old views and new perspectives regarding the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus, evidence of pitch neurons in the auditory midbrain of chinchillas, representing amplitude modulated sounds in two fields in the auditory cortex of a cat, the processing of inter-aural delay in the inferior colliculus, correlates of forward masking in squirrel monkeys, and using classified averaging to reduce background noise while measuring the human auditory brainstem response.
