This an amazing compilation of the 20th Century in Europe. Written from a European perspective, the author traveled through Europe to visit and be a part of the various sites, incidents, and defining moments of the Century. This is compelling reading, and a history we should all read.

European history in the 20th century presented in three layers -- the view from 1999, when the author visited various hot spots of European history; first-person accounts (through interviews or source material) of many landmark events of the century by people who witnessed or participated in them; and big-picture overview. History on a human scale with a genial and learned tour guide.
