Rob Shoemaker, June 2, 2008 (view all comments by Rob Shoemaker)
Out of the large number of beginning bass instruction books, this one is the best. Canty has struck an excellent balance between the different elements of becoming a good musician and bass player. The musical examples are fun, and will neither intimidate an absolute beginner or bore an intermediate player. The explanations of technique are clear and thorough, and he includes just enough music theory so that the new bass player will learn the role of the instrument, and will be able to continue learning on his or her own.
