Publisher Comments:

New York Times bestselling author Terry Goodkind returns to tell the newest tale of The Sword of Truth, throwing Seeker Richard Rahl and Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell to the opposite ends of the world in their struggle against the relentless and monolithic forces of the Imperial Order.
When a Sister of the Dark captures Richard, he makes a desperate sacrifice to ensure that his beloved Kahlan remains free. Taken deep into the Old World and forced to help build a new Palace of the Prophets, he is determined to remain defiant even in the heart of darkness.
Left behind and unwilling to abandon the cause of the Midlands, Kahlan violates prophecy and breaks her last pledge to Richard to raise an army against the advancing hordes of the Imperial Order. Finally she will come face to face with the force of terror sweeping her land — the army of the mad dreamwalker, Emperor Jagang.
Separated and fighting for their lives, Richard and Kahlan will be pushed to the limits of their endurance and tested in their love for one another. Terry Goodkind spins a tale of love and loss sure to enthrall readers around the world.

Review:

"A plot summary doesn't do justice to Goodkind's well-constructed book, in which he develops marginally plausible plot elements into a credible story and says something serious about the abuse of guilt and selflessness to motivate social behavior. Goodkind is moving up in the ranks of the followers of Tolkien, Eddings, and Jordan." Roland Green, Booklist

Review:

"For sheer volume of its Technicolor bloodbaths and its bathetic propagandistic bombast, this installment of Goodkind's fantasy saga makes an indelible impact; anyone who yearns for Goodkind is going to be in high clover." Publishers Weekly

Synopsis:

Terry Goodkind author of the enormously popular Sword of Truth novels, has forged perhaps his best novel yet, pitting Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell against threats to the freedom of the world that will take them to opposite ends of the world to defeat the forces of chaos and anarchy.

Emperor Jagang is rising once again in the Old World and Richard must face him, on his own turf. Richard heads into the Old World with Cara, the Mord-Sith, while his beloved Kahlan remains behind. Unwilling to heed an ancient prophecy, Kahlan raises an army and goes into battle against forces threatening armed insurrection in the Midlands.

Separated and fighting for their lives, Richard and Kahlan will be tested to the utmost.

This was without a doubt my favorite book of the series thus far. Goodkind exceeded his previous standards by unprecedented extremes in this offering. The beloved characters we've known for so long appear in a new and acutely-focused light, exposing sacred and truly invaluable traits, and revealing to the reader the absolute truth of the importance of life, of will, and of spirit. I loved this one, the passion and vigor are without equal.

Brent Burnside, March 5, 2010 (view all comments by Brent Burnside)
I love this series. This book along with all his other books in the sword of truth series are excellent. I have read a lot of fantasy books from George RR Martin, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, Tracey Hickman, etc. But Terry Goodkind is by far the best. He builds his characters to a point were they come to life as you read. Richard, Khalin and Cara are the most interesting characters I have ever read about. Terry Goodkind also creates characters such as Sister Nicci that you start off hating and end up loving later. I highly recommend Terry Goodkinds "Sword of Truth" series. I suggest not letting younger kids read this series because Terry Goodkind does have a tendancy to get a little graphic through out the series.
