DANCING LIGHTS, DISAPPEARING VALUABLES....AND MURDER — A FANCIFUL MYSTERY FOR THE INDOMITABLE AGATHA<P>Feeling jilted, cross and desperate to reclaim James, the love of her life, Agatha Raisin follows a fortune-teller's advice and rents a cottage in the picturesque village of Fryfam, where she hopes good fortune and true love will come chasing after her. Adding a bit of spice to her adventure, she's pronounced to the locals that she's a mystery writer penning a whodunit called Murder at the Manor. Unfortunately, her romantic notions are quickly dispelled by strange doings here in Fryfam. What are those strange lights in her backyard? Who is stealing paintings and pottery? Where are her beloved cats? And who murdered the local squire — ironically, at the manor? Agatha's nose for trouble leads her into a hodgepodge of jealousy, blackmail and dangerous liaisons — and a murderer who plans to keep irrepressible Agatha here in Fryfam permanently, as a resident corpse.

Synopsis:

When a fortune teller from a previous case informs Agatha Raisin that her destiny-and true love-lies in Norfolk, she promptly rents a cottage in the quaint village of Fryfam. No sooner does she arrive than strange things start happening. Random objects go missing from people's homes and odd little lights are seen dancing in the villagers' gardens and yards. Stories soon begin circulating about the presence of fairies.

But when a prominent village resident is found murdered, and some suspicion falls on her and her friend Sir Charles Fraith, Agatha decides she's had enough of this fairy nonsense and steps up her sleuthing for a human killer.

The prickly yet endearing Agatha will have fans dangling in suspense: Will she catch her crook-and a husband?

Arboreality, August 12, 2007 (view all comments by Arboreality)
I admit, I am not a murder mystery reader by habit. This was a desperation read over a vacation weekend. However... this book was terrible. I am horrified to learn that M.C. Beaton is, in fact, a woman, and therefore guilty of writing such demeaning prose about her own gender.

The mystery itself is unremarkable... not bad, not exceedingly clever, and entirely too many convenient events leading to it's resolution. The deplorable plot line surrounding our intrepid Agatha, however, cannot be ignored. She's an awful woman. She's rude, incredibly selfish, obsessed with her looks and her "shapely legs", has horrible judgment, and only manages to "solve" the crime by eventually bumbling about so much she angers all involved enough to force an eruption.

Please don't waste your time on this book when there are so many better out there.
