Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When Britain intercepted a French ship and its precious cargo — an unhatched dragon's egg — Capt. Will Laurence of HMS Reliant unexpectedly became master and commander of the noble dragon he named Temeraire. As new recruits in Britain's Aerial Corps, man and dragon soon proved their mettle in daring combat against Bonaparte's invading forces.

Now China has discovered that its rare gift, intended for Napoleon, has fallen into British hands — and an angry Chinese delegation vows to reclaim the remarkable beast. But Laurence refuses to cooperate. Facing the gallows for his defiance, Laurence has no choice but to accompany Temeraire back to the Far East — a long voyage fraught with peril, intrigue, and the untold terrors of the deep. Yet once the pair reaches the court of the Chinese emperor, even more shocking discoveries and darker dangers await.

Review:

"Temeraire is a dragon for the ages." Terry Brooks

Review:

"Readers with a penchant for both Patrick O'Brian and Anne McCaffrey may have found their perfect match. Naomi Novik beautifully renders an early-eighteenth-century Europe in which both naval buffs and dragon lovers will be keen to immerse themselves." Alan Dean Foster, author of the Pip & Flinx series

Review:

"A splendid series. Not only is it a new way to utilize dragons, it's a very clever one and fits neatly into the historical niche this author has used." Anne McCaffrey, New York Times-bestselling author of the Pern series

When England captured a French ship and took a dragon egg that turned out to be a rare Chinese breed they though they had gotten lucky. But now China wants the dragon back and are threatening war if they don't get him. England quickly agrees to send him back, but they are about to find out that if a dragon doesn't want to go somewhere it is very difficult to make him.

Really, really brilliant! I highly recommend this alternate history series to fans of good writing, great dragons and witty characters.

Just as enjoyable as the first one. I loved the opportunity to see how other parts of the world handle the coexistence of dragons and humans. The contrast between Temeraire, who is highly intelligent but something of an innocent, and Laurence, who has more knowledge of the workings of the world, creates a lot of juicy conflict.

Events conspire to send Laurence and Temeraire to China, where they face a most sticky diplomatic situation... Novik continues to flesh out Temeraire and Laurence and the world they inhabit. There are fewer naval battles in this one, but loads of intrigue to make up for it.
