During a routine naval drill at Pearl Harbor, American forces detect a ship of unknown origins that’s crashed in the Pacific Ocean. Lieutenant Alex Hopper, an officer aboard the USS John Paul Jones, is ordered to investigate the ominous-looking vessel—which turns out to be part of an armada of ships that are stronger and faster than any on Earth. And that’s when the Navy’s radar goes down. Ambushed by a ravenous enemy they cannot see, a small U.S. fleet makes their last stand on the open ocean, armed with little more than their instincts, to defend their lives—and the world as we know it.

Lieutenant Alex Hopper has finally gotten his life turned around... or so it seems, until he gets into a fistfight with a visiting Japanese officer that sets him up for a captain's mast. Now his future in the U.S. Navy and even his potential marriage to his girlfriend are on shaky ground. But then, during the RIMPAC International Naval War Games, a mysterious ship crashes into the Pacific Ocean, and Hopper's ship is one of those sent to investigate. And then the aliens attack. Does Hopper have what it takes to win this deadly contest?

Peter David's novelized version of the new "Battleship" movie makes for a surprisingly entertaining read. It can be hard to properly capture the feel of an action movie with the written word, but David does a good job. The story, outlandish as it may be, is engaging, and the characters are a colorful bunch, even if Hopper himself is not entirely likeable. The movie itself is likely much more fun, but this novel is a great way to get a taste of the action. While there isn't much actual connection to the Hasbro game, this novel is still a fun and exciting way to spend an afternoon.
