How To Survive Middle School, and its protagonist David Greenburg, are likeable and memorable. David's first few months of middle school are tense, funny and heartwarming. Most kids are apprehensive about starting middle school. Luckily, for most of them, their fears are calmed after the first few days. Not for David Greenburg. Middle school begins even worse than he feared. His best friend, and only friend from elementary school going to the same middle school, is now best friends with the school bully, and they have chosen David as their target. His only new friend is a girl, Sophie, a gregarious misfit who has never been to school before. And, thanks to his former best friend, the principal decides that David is a troublemaker. David's life at home is different. He is an aspiring talk show host and produces Jon Stewart parodies to post online. Thanks to Sophie, the videos are becoming an online hit. If only things at school were going as well. How To Survive Middle School is a quick read making it perfect for reluctant readers. The characters are well developed, and the events have enough suspense, humor and surprises in them to appeal to all reading tastes.
